Infrastructure Restoration

Penn Excavating was called in by a local community to completely replace a 30 plus year old pedestrian foot bridge for a network of nature walking trails. Not only was the wood rotting out making it unsafe to cross but the small stream the bridge spanned over was slowly starting to erode the bank putting the bridge footings/piers in jeopardy of failing.

Penn Excavating quickly and safely got to work carefully removing and the old bridge and stabilizing the heavily eroded bank with large piece of stone. After thorough examination it was determined the bridge piers and footings were able to be saved and used for the new bridge. Not having to pour new footings and piers was a tremendous cost saver for the project. Once the banks were stablized and footings and piers were cleaned off the framing of the bridge began.

The bridge deck was quickly installed and a sturdy railing was built to finish off the bridge. A ramp was cut next to the bridge to provide a creek crossing for safety vehicles and maintenance purpose. The site was stabilized with grass seed and straw and the bridge was reopened for use in two days. Still to this day this remains one of Penn Excavating favourite projects.

We were happy to help a local community and its residents. The system of trails is beloved by locals as a way to experience the beauty and peacefulness of nature.
